The Trans Nzoia government will this year implement a strategy that will see maize yields increased by 10 percent.

Governor George Natembeya on Wednesday said in the plan,his government will commence giving out free certified seeds and subsidized fertiliser to small scale farmers.

He made the sentiments at Kitale show grounds after presiding over a passout parade of the newly recruited security wardens.

The distribution of the farming aids the governor said will start on March 1.

Natembeya’s administration commenced the program dubbed as Mbegu initiative last year that saw an improvement in maize production.

Trans Nzoia is known for maize production even though other crops do well owing to it’s good climatic conditions.

“We want to completely eradicate hunger in our county.This can only be realized if we help our farmers by availing certified seeds and fertiliser”said the governor.

He however warned area leaders against politicizing the distribution program.

He said some of his critics are fond of opposing his programs without weighing the beneficial gains to the people of Trans Nzoia. 

Natembeya also disclosed that in two weeks time,his administration will start issuing bursary cheques for applicants from humble background.He said 10,000 students in secondary schools are targeted in the program.

The ceremony was colourful and well attended.Among the attendees were  Public service CECM Julia Ruto,County secretary Truphosa Amere,Lands CECM Janerose Mutama and Boniface Wanyonyi (finance),Stanley Kirui(Education),Jackson Amboka(Roads), Chanelle Kittony(Gender&sports)and chief of staff Dickson Wamocho.

Others were chief officers Dr.Emmanuel Wanjala Majimoto(Governance),his PSM counterpart Philip Kapeten,Dorothy Nyukuri(Environment),Dr.Roselyne Nasiebanda, Sammy Sichangi of Agriculture and Patrick Osoro(Livestock). 

Directors Dr.Felix Sialo(Communications)Imelda Agoi(Human Resource Management),Fred Ndubi(Enforcement),Joshua Werunga(political affairs)Justina Sitti(Gender affairs) are among many government officials who attended the event.

In the passout parade function,more than 240 youths graduated after undergoing more than one month in-depth training.
