In a significant push to improve transportation and economic prospects, the Trans Nzoia administration, led by Governor George Natembeya, has initiated a road construction project in Matumbei ward, Endebess sub-county.

Mr. Chrispinus Wakoli, Clerk of Works for the Department of Roads and Public Works, announced during a recent inspection visit that the project encompasses over five major roads and 22 minor roads. Light grading and bush clearing will be prioritized on the smaller routes.

Wakoli emphasized the challenges posed by Matumbei’s mountainous terrain, particularly the slopes of Mount Elgon. He highlighted the need for heavy machinery like dozers to open up roads neglected for years.

Margaret Mutai, the area’s Member of County Assembly (MCA), highlighted the importance of the project in the previous fiscal year, where over 33 kilometers of roads were constructed in the ward.

This year’s initial phase, utilizing county graders allocated to each MCA for 12 working days across all 25 wards, has already seen 20 kilometers completed.

“The road network is crucial for achieving economic development in any region,” stated MCA Mutai. “Transporting agricultural produce, accessing healthcare services, and ensuring children can attend school all rely on good roads.”

Acknowledging the inconvenience caused by construction on roads untouched for 15 years, Mutai urged residents for patience. She commended their cooperation, which has facilitated the smooth progress of the project.

The Department of Works detailed specific roadworks being undertaken:

Kimwondo Primary – Rwanda Forest Road: bush clearing, heavy grading, culvert installation, full graveling, and mitre drains.

Matumbei Secondary – Embakasi – Labot – Riwa – Justus Bridge – Kaibei Road: bush clearing, heavy grading, culvert installation, full graveling, and mitre drains.

Conner Kiboi-Kiboi Primary – Kiboi Forest Road: bush clearing, heavy grading, culvert installation, full graveling, and mitre drains.

Kimwondo Center – Kimwondo Police Post: light bush clearing, heavy grading, cut-to-spoil material utilization, full graveling, and mitre drain opening.
